Catherine Lentini’s painting is grounded in self-imposed rules, an affinity for color, and a fascination with the illusionistic space on the flat surface of a canvas. Using imagery informed by both digital space and tropes of hard-edge painting from the twentieth century, her process incorporates basic arithmetic and abstract reasoning to create an image that engages the mind and is delightful to perceive.
The duochrome paintings in her most recent body of work depict systems of gradients layered on top of background patterns which shift the perception of the colors in the gradient, punctuated by different optically charged elements similar to digital test patterns. Each painting serves as a proposed solution to the constraints imposed by working within this framework, an expression of Lentini’s interest in painting as a way of thinking.

Abattoir is thrilled to introduce a partnership the Quarter Apartments located at 2615 Detroit Ave, in Hingetown, Ohio City. This new, secondary location of Abattoir is a street-level gallery space that will host quarterly shows focused both on emerging artists in the Cleveland area as well as noteworthy artists from around the country. Abattoir will present thought-provoking exhibitions in the ground floor gallery space of the residential complex. With four shows—one for each season—the gallery has made a commitment to showcasing artists working in the near west side neighborhood while also exposing the residents to compelling work nationally. The gallery is excited to play an active role keeping art part of the streetscape and the community. Additionally, Abattoir will host artists’ talks that will be publicized and open to everyone.
Catherine Lentini, a painter based in Gordon Square, is native to northern California and received her BA from Bennington College and her MFA from Kent State University. Lentini, who studied mathematics and visual art, works in geometric abstraction. Her dynamic patterned paintings pulsate with energy and jewel-like colors, in shapes recalling the phone screens and monitors that are present in our daily lives.
While shows are always on view from the street, Abattoir/Quarter gallery space will be accessible to the public on opening days and by appointment.
