Kitchen Table Issues
May 22 – June 20, 2024
ABATTOIR @ The Quarter
2615 Detroit Ave, Hingetown, Ohio City
Abattoir is pleased to announce an exhibition of paintings and drawings by Katie Butler on view through June at Abattoir @ The Quarter. Kitchen Table Issues includes politically charged works of lavish campaign dinner scenes, posing critical commentary on the financial disparities in American society, set against a background of the midwestern landscape. With superficial notions of “bread and butter issues” at the center of campaigns, the dinner table becomes a metaphorical stage for political theater. Objects symbolic of wealth, greed, and political power sit amongst the rich displays of food–reminders of who gets a seat at the table and how the system favors them at the expense of others. Skewed perspectives and exaggerated scale relationships disinvite the viewer from entering the scene, emphasizing this unequal power dynamic.
Abattoir @ The Quarter is a street-level gallery space that will host shows focused on emerging artists in the Cleveland area. The exhibitions will be designed to expose the residents to working artists in the neighborhood while making art part of the streetscape.
While shows are always on view from the street, Abattoir/Quarter gallery space will be accessible to the public on opening days and by appointment.
